London’s glow radiates ever brighter as the city is adorned with yet more sporting gold

London has been decorated with another gold medal as it claimed the top spot for the prestigious ‘Sport City Award’ at the 2012 International Sports Event Management Awards last night.

Beating off worldwide competition including Melbourne, Auckland, Copenhagen and Düsseldorf as well as home-grown contenders including Manchester and Glasgow, London stormed ahead to seal the win for the second year running, cementing its position as the world’s leading major events destination.

Guests included the cream of the industry from the world’s biggest events, leading brand names and most acclaimed sports agencies who gathered at the Mayfair event, which forms part of the 7th Annual Sports Event Management Conference 2012.

Collecting the award on behalf of the city and the Mayor of London’s promotional organisation London & Partners’, Head of Major Events Iain Edmondson said: “We are delighted that London has been recognised once again in such a momentous year. Since winning the bid to host the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games and delivering on its promise by staging arguably the best Games the world has seen, London has positioned itself as the city where great things start and where global events gain major success. Hot on the heels of the Games, we have already won and are bidding for a number of World and European Championships over the next decade, both in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and at venues across London, ensuring that an enduring sporting legacy from the Games is realised.”

Over the last decade, London has strengthened its position as a sports destination to become recognised globally as a leading city for major sporting events, having already won the bid to host major sporting events post-2012 including the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships, 2013 UEFA Champions League Final, the 2013 ITU World Championship Series Triathlon Grand Final, the 2015 Canoe Slalom World Championships and the creation of RideLondon, a brand new world class two-day festival of cycling which will take place in the summer of 2013.

As well as the Olympic related events London boasts a range of regular major sporting events such as the Wimbledon Championships, The FA Cup Final and The London Marathon which have for years captured the imagination of the world. Other global events such as the Grand Depart of the Tour De France, the regular season NFL games held at Wembley Stadium and the ATP tennis, which has this week just been confirmed to remain in London until at least 2015, are all evidence that the largest sports, rights holders and sponsors are choosing the capital as the most exciting destination for major events.

Also collecting an award last night was world-leading sports event branding specialist and strategic partner to London & Partners, Icon which claimed gold in the Event Look category for its work on this year's Euro 2012 Football tournament for UEFA.
