London & Partners' World Record London packs another punch

To celebrate Mr. Punch's 350th anniversary, London & Partners announces that a new Guinness World Records title for the world's first recorded Mr. Punch puppet show has been awarded as part of World Record London. The award was presented today to commemorate 350 years since Mr. Punch first appeared in a theatre booth in London's Covent Garden in May 1662.

To highlight London's success this year London & Partners are setting a challenge for the city to break 20 Guinness World Records and become a multi-record breaking city.

The organisers of The Big Grin Festival and the 37th annual Covent Garden May Fayre and puppet festival held on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th May 2012 in Covent Garden, along with puppeteers from across the world, were the proud recipients of the title.

Robert Styles, Associate Festival Director for The Big Grin, says, "We are delighted that Mr. Punch remains a record breaker in the 21st Century and is able to celebrate in style thanks to a community education project made possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The award is accepted on behalf of Punch performers past & present who have all played their part in keeping the tradition alive."

Covent Garden is renowned for its arts and theatre heritage and it remains a huge draw for millions of visitors who come to enjoy the talent, creativity and the unique atmosphere."

It has been 350 years since Samuel Pepys recorded in his diary the sighting of Mr Punch on the streets of Covent Garden and the on 12th and 13th Punch and Judy professors from across the world will this event – making it a rare opportunity to enjoy the professional puppet shows; the Punch parade around the Piazza; workshops, stalls; folk music; maypole dancing and clowns.
