St John’s Gate, in Clerkenwell, once formed the entrance to Priory of the Knights of St John. The Gate’s colourful history is closely linked with Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson, William Hogarth and Charles Dickens.
