Museum of London Docklands Overview

Museum in Docklands explores the history of London’s river and port, along with the stories of people from all over the world whose lives became woven into its activities. The Museum is housed in a Grade I listed warehouse built in 1802, a magnificent exhibit in itself, and once used to store the cargo transported to the docks. The story begins 2000 years ago when the Romans set up a trading post on the banks of the Thames and continues with the growth of London into the largest port the world had ever known, before its post-war decline and the development of Canary Wharf. On display are exotic objects which speak of overseas travels, as well workshops equipped with the original tools of now forgotten trades. Sailortown reconstructs the smells and narrow alleys of Victorian Wapping High Street whilst London, Sugar and Slavery, reveals the city’s involvement with the transatlantic slave trade. The Museum also boasts its own bar and restaurant, 1802.
